Mythological figures

The second silver coin of the Czech Mint from the series called Mythological Characters features the tragic Medusa.

No man could resist the ethereal beauty of a girl named Medusa - both mortals and ancient gods longed for her. Although she had her pick of suitors, she chose to be the immaculate handmaiden of the goddess AthenaPoseidon, ruler of the seas, who thought he must have her at all costs, took no for an answer and took possession of Medusa right in Athena's temple. The virgin goddess was angered that her sanctuary had been defiled, and since she could not punish the powerful god, she turned her anger against the innocent victim. She transformed the beauty with the beautiful hair into a monster with snakes writhing on her head. Whoever looked into her eyes since then was turned to stone. In this way, Medusa killed many men before a river named Perseus stood in her way... The perception of Medusa, one of the most famous figures of Greek mythology, has evolved over the centuries. For one, she was a temptress turned monster, for another a victim turned heroine. Gradually, she became a symbol of female rage, and many believe that Athena's curse was actually a gift. It gave the fragile girl who could not resist violence the power and strength to never have to be afraid again…

The coin is the work of Roman Šamiljan, who is not only a renowned sculptor but also an admired tattoo artist. His distinctive style is characterized by dynamic strokes and hypnotic gazes that stand out both on human skin and in pure silver. The reverse side presents the terrifying Medusa. Her hypnotic face is framed by snake curls. As the licence to issue the commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is granted by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its national emblem, the face value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2024. These necessary attributes are supplemented with elemental nature - rocks, clouds, trees and waves. The details of the relief are accentuated by the patina.

We also offer a collector's album where you can store your complete 12-piece coin collection featuring characters from the realms of myth, legend and fantasy.
