Product description
Another silver coin from the series inspired by the Lord of the Rings film trilogy commemorates the unfortunate Gollum.
Sméagol was a curious and, like most hobbits, good-natured fellow, but then his fateful birthday arrived. Then he and his cousin Deagol went fishing, but instead of fish, they fished a ring out of the river. They had no idea what had gotten into them, but they fought over the treasure and Sméagol murdered his best friend. It was no ordinary jewel, but a lost Ring of Power that belonged to the Dark Lord Sauron, who wanted to take over the world with it. Sméagol quickly discovered that his birthday present had magical power and began to use it for evil deeds. He became evil and malicious and began to make a gurgling guttural clack that earned him the nickname Gollum. It was not long before the hobbit family decided to banish their relative, who had changed beyond recognition. Gollum found refuge deep in the dark and dank bowels of the Misty Mountains, where his only companion was the Ring - his "pet" - which unnaturally prolonged his life. Five hundred years later, the magical artifact warped the hobbit's body and mind. Gollum became a repulsive creature with a split personality and an unquestioningly devoted slave to the Ring... The Ring could have remained lost forever and the world would have been spared its terrible power, but one day a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins wandered into a cave in the Misty Mountains...
The reverse side of the coin is dominated by a coloured depiction of Gollum, his face twisted with anger. The relief background depicts the bowels of his cave. The obverse side then presents the portrait and name of the monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2022 and the nominal value of TWO DOLLARS (NZD) - i.e. the attributes of the issuer of the coin, which is the island of Niue. The coin was minted by the team at the New Zealand Mint under official film licence.
An integral part of the issue is an elegant wooden case with a special mechanism used to display the coin.
