Product description

Among the most famous works of English literature is the novel trilogy The Lord of the Rings, whose film adaptation exactly 25 years ago captivated the entire world. It is therefore no surprise that The Royal Mint is paying tribute to it with a commemorative coin.

When John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, a professor of Old English literature, began writing fiction, it was purely for his own pleasure and to entertain his children. At the time, he certainly had no idea that he was creating a seminal work of 20th-century literature. Following the fairy-tale-like *The Hobbit*, he embarked on a trilogy that was more sophisticated in both language and concept, which he titled *The Lord of the Rings*. Although he drew on medieval myths and Norse sagas in his writing, he created an entirely new world with its own history, language, and legends. The story, which takes place in his Middle-earth, tells of Sauron—an ancient Dark Lord who, since the dawn of time, has sought to rule the world. His masterstroke lay in the creation of magical rings, which he bestowed upon the rulers of men, elves, and dwarves. These jewels granted their wearers incredible power, but at the same time became their undoing. For Sauron had secretly forged one more ring for himself, through which he then ruled all the others… Tolkien’s epic was so imaginative and complex that many believed it could not be adapted for the silver screen. Nearly half a century later, however, a miracle occurred. New Zealand director Peter Jackson took on the “unfilmable” story and proved all the skeptics wrong…

The reverse side of the commemorative coin features Sauron’s blazing eye, surrounded by the One Ring and iconic verses inscribed in the Black Speech of Mordor. The obverse side of the coin features the issuer’s attributes, which means the nominal value of 50 PENCE (GBP), a portrait of King Charles III, the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D (Charles III, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith), and the year of issue 2026.

An integral part of the coin, created in collaboration with Warner Bros., is special packaging filled with images and interesting facts from the world of The Lord of the Rings (in English).
