Product description

The history of Great Britain is inextricably linked to a succession of great kings and queens. The name of the gold investment coin, the Sovereign – meaning ‘Ruler’ – which is struck by the British Royal Mint, pays homage to the tradition of the island’s monarchy.

The first gold Sovereigns were struck in Great Britain between 1489 and 1603. Their fineness was originally 23 carats, but King Henry VIII had it reduced to 22 carats, thereby setting a new global standard. Sovereigns did not reappear until 1817 – after the monarchy had enshrined gold as the sole standard of value. Until 1932, they formed part of the British gold standard as legal tender; today, their significance is purely investment-related. Throughout more than two centuries of the Sovereign’s existence, they have borne the portrait of every British monarch.

The obverse features a portrait of the monarch, whilst the reverse of the Sovereign traditionally depicts the historical scene of St George’s battle with the dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci.

Thanks to the depiction of this beloved saint, the coin serves not only as a wise investment, but also as a valuable gift or a talisman for good luck.
