Product description

The twenty-first silver medal from the Czech Mint, weighing one kilogram, released as part of a series dedicated to our statutory cities, features Třinec.

Třinec lies amidst the picturesque mountains of the Moravian-Silesian and Silesian Beskids. The first written mention of this town dates back to the 15th century, but no major historical events took place here. Life was peaceful, and even in the first half of the 19th century, it was one of many agricultural villages owned by the Cieszyn Chamber, which administered Habsburg estates in the region. However, a major turning point came in 1839. Given the rich deposits of iron ore, abundant hydropower, and endless forests, it was decided to establish ironworks. Here, fences, poles, staircases, stoves, tableware, and grave crosses were produced, as well as smaller items such as candlesticks, ashtrays, and animal figurines. In 1871, a railway was built connecting Třinec with Slovakian ore deposits and the Ostrava-Karviná coal reserves. This opened up access to distant markets for the Třinec ironworks, and by the end of the century, they had become the largest in the entire monarchy. In 1930, Těšín was elevated to city status, and in 2018, it became a statutory city. Throughout this time, it grew hand in hand with the ironworks. Today, with a production of 2.5 million tons, they are our largest producer of crude steel. The main products include, above all, long rolled products. With all the rails produced in Třinec, one could build a track that would circle the entire planet three times…

Medal designer ŠtěpánkaDoležalová placed the Třinec steelworks complex on the obverse side of the medal. The composition of the obverse side is completed by a detailed aerial view of the city. The reverse side of the medal features a map of the Czech Republic with its statutory cities marked.

Not only is the weight of the one-kilogram coin impressive, but so is its mintage - only 24 numbered pieces will be produced, each stored in a luxurious wooden case.
