Statutory towns

The nineteenth silver medal of the Czech Mint weighing one kilogram, which is issued as part of the cycle dedicated to our statutory cities, represents Přerov.

Přerov is situated on both banks of the Bečva River and its advantageous location was already realised by prehistoric people who had their settlements here and who hunted mammoths thousands of years BC. In the times of Great Moravia, a fortress grew up here, and in 1141 a charter of the Bishop of Olomouc dates back to the year 1141, which ranks Přerov Castle Church among the most important sanctuaries in Moravia. This document is the first written record of Přerov as a town. In later centuries, the Žerotín family contributed to the development of the area, and Charles the Elder of Žerotín - a prominent politician and Moravian patriot - made Přerov his seat. The history of Přerov is also intrinsically linked with the Unity of Brothers and its most famous representatives - Jan Blahoslav, who was born here, and Jan Amos Komenský, who studied and taught here. The rapid development of the town took place after the construction of the main railway line from Vienna to Olomouc and then in the era of socialism, when the food processing, chemical and engineering industries boomed. Přerov, an important transport crossroads and a key economic centre of the Olomouc Region, became a statutory town in 2006.

The medal maker Štěpánka Doležalová placed the St. Lawrence Church in Přerov - originally Gothic, later rebuilt in Baroque style - on the obverse side of the medal. An elaborated aerial view of the city centre completes the composition of the obverse side. The reverse side of the medal then bears a map of the Czech Republic with the statutory towns marked.

It is not only the weight of the one-kilogram mintage that is impressive, but also its mintage - only 24 numbered pieces will be produced and placed in a luxurious wooden case.
