Product description
The series of silver commemorative medals of the Czech Mint presents Melchior, one of the Three Kings, who is another key figure of Bethlehem scene right after Jesus, Virgin Mary and St. Joseph.
The birth of Jesus Christ was proclaimed by the glow of the star. It brought to Bethlehem not only to the local shepherds, but also the three kings who had come from a great distance to worship the savior. They were not sovereigns in the true sense of the word, but rather scholars. That is why they are often called three sages or three magicians. They probably came from the Persian Babylon and were pagans, which means that Jesus should become the king of all of us without distinction, not just the Israelites. The Kings were named Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. These names, however, can not be found in the New Testament. They were found out as a part of the later tradition of Christmas celebrations that end with the feast of the Three Kings.
The obverse side of the medal from the workshop of female medal maker Marie Filova, DiS., presents kneeling Melchior with a crown on his head. He holds a chest with gold - his gift to Jesus. The star that lights up the countryside with two camels shines above his head. On the reverse side of the medal is a four-corner star from the Temple of the Nativity, which marks the exact place in Bethlehem where Jesus Christ came into the world.
Melchior can be stored in the collector's album in the form of a folding bethlehem alongside the Holy Family and two other kings - Caspar and Balthazar.
