Renowned military and political leader
The first American President came from a wealthy planter family. He was born on 22 February 1732 in Bridge's Creek and died on 13 December 1799 in Mount Vernon (both places are in the state of Virginia).
In 1789, George Washington was unanimously elected the first US President. He succeeded in reorganizing the state administration as well as the army, and paying off the state debt. He supported the re-establishment of relations with Great Britain. Thanks to his military and political achievements he was elected to the post of president for the second time in 1793. Washington was one of the founders of two political parties system in the country. When a war between the United States and France seemed to threaten, Washington accepted – at the request of the then president J. Q. Adams - the appointment to the post of the Commander-in-Chief of the American Army in the rank of Lieutenant General. However, soon afterwards he died.
The Americans paid a tribute to their first president by naming after him their capital and one of the American states.
The main motif on the obverse side of the medal is George Washington’s portrait. On the left side there is the inscription The First President in two lines, and on the opposite side the president’s name.
The entire field of the reverse side is taken up by a composition depicting the American flag.
