Cult of personality

The twelfth silver medal of the Czech Mint from the series entitled Cult of Personality commemorates the admired figure of Winston Churchill.

When the name Winston Churchill is mentioned , we think of an imposing man smoking a cigar with his fingers raised in a triumphant gesture. We think of a shrewd politician who warned of the German threat before both world wars and who warned of the growing danger of communism. We will recall the legendary speeches that brought the British nation together and restored its faith in victory. "We will go on to the end, we will fight in France, we will fight on the seas and oceans, we will fight with increasing boldness and strength, we will defend our island at any cost, we will fight on the beaches, we will fight on the landing places, we will fight in the fields and in the streets, we will fight in the hills, we will never give up, and if yes - which I do not believe for a moment - this island or a large part of it is conquered and languishes, then our overseas empire, armed and protected by the British fleet, will continue to fight until God willing and the new world with all its strength and power goes forth to rescue and liberate the old world, " declared the British Prime Minister in 1940 - at the most difficult hour, when the Nazi invasion threatened and all seemed lost. In the end, however, the British Empire did indeed persevere, and won. The triumph of the Second World War made Churchill an icon. Today he is seen as one of history's greatest statesmen, a fierce fighter against fascism, a defender of liberal democracy and a promoter of a united Europe. But he also had a second, controversial face. He was a convinced defender of imperialism and racism, who did not shy away from war crimes and did not hesitate to waste human lives...

The obverse side of the medal, which is the work of academic sculptor Jiří Dostál, presents a characteristic portrait of Winston Churchill, supplemented with his name and life dates. The reverse side is then dominated by the British flag which is supplemented with an excerpt from Churchill's speech of 13 May 1940: ...NOTHING BUT BLOOD, GUTTER, SWEAT AND TEARS (13. 5. 1940: …NIC NEŽ KREV, DŘINU, POT A SLZY).

Each medal includes a special appendix offering an objective view of Winston Churchill through the eyes of historian Pavel Kosatik.
