Silver half-a-kilo medal Statutory town of Třinec stand numbered
Product description
The twenty-first statutory city to appear on medals from the Czech Mint, minted from half a kilogram of pure silver, is Třinec.
Třinec lies near the border with Poland, between the Moravian-Silesian and Silesian Beskids. For centuries, it was one of many agricultural villages in the Cieszyn region, where life was quiet and peaceful. As late as the early 19th century, only 300 people lived here, and they had neither a church nor a school. On April 1, 1839, however, everything changed. A charcoal-fired blast furnace was built here, iron ore mining began, and charcoal production started in the forests. The ironworks in Třinec then produced all sorts of things - stoves and ashtrays, fences and animal figurines - and by the end of the 19th century, they had become the largest in the entire monarchy. The following 20th century was turbulent for Třinec. After World War I, it became part of Czechoslovakia, which fought a battle with neighboring Poland over it. In 1930, it was granted city status. Following the Munich Agreement, it was occupied by Poland, and during World War II, it was controlled by the Third Reich. Today, it is a proud statutory city of the Czech Republic, whose steelworks are the largest producer of crude steel in the country. Its main products include, in particular, long rolled products - wire and rails. All the rails produced in Třinec could be used to build a track that would circle the entire planet three times!
The obverse side of the medal, designed by medallist Štěpánka Doležalová, features the Třinec steelworks complex. The composition of the obverse side is complemented by a detailed aerial view of the city. The reverse side of the medal bears a map of the Czech Republic with the statutory cities marked.
A total of just 48 pieces of the half-kilogram medals will be produced - each specimen is hand-numbered on the edge and stored in a luxurious wooden case.
