Silver coin Fairytale World of Zdeněk Smetana - Štaflík and Špagetka proof

The second silver coin from the Czech Mint’s three-part miniseries titled The Fairytale World of Zdeněk Smetana features Štaflík and Špagetka.

“We lived in an apartment building, and our daughter kept hamsters and other animals. She really wanted a dog, but one wouldn’t fit in the apartment building, so we came up with Štaflík and Špagetka,” recalled Anna Munková, describing how she and her husband Jiří Munk created two inseparable canine friends. The couple’s imagination then gave rise to a children’s television series, with Zdeněk Smetana handling the visual design. The first episodes appeared on screens in 1971, but the originally intended title Psí život had to be changed—according to communist censors, it suggested that people were not living well during the Normalization era. The series was thus renamed Štaflík and Špagetka. Since its heroes are silent characters—not only the two dogs, but also a crow—the creators did not give them voices. However, the sound effects were provided by Uncle Jedlička.

The coin was designed by medalist Eva Prousková, DiS., who created a faithful relief reconstruction of Zdeněk Smetana’s work. On the reverse side, you will find Štaflík and Špagetka, connected by intertwined scarves. Since the Czech Mint’s coins are issued under a foreign license from the island of Niue, the obverse side features a portrait of King Charles III, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), and the year of issue 2026.
