Czech and Czechoslovak Hockey Legends
The “Czechoslovak Hockey Legends” series must not miss the top Czech scorer of all time. The Czech Mint pays tribute to Milan Nový by issuance of the silver coin.
The centre with the nickname "Balík" coming from Kladno was a terror to the goalkeepers at home and abroad. He has scored 470 goals in 633 matches during sixteen seasons and has won six championship titles at home. He has played 211 matches and scored 120 goals for the Czechoslovak national team. He won a precious metal at each of the seven World Championships. He won two gold medals and silver medal at the Innsbruck Olympics. We would hardly choose one of these goals, but Milan Nový is pretty sure about it. He sees his biggest triumph as the goal he scored in the Canadian Cup in 1976, when he played with the best world hockey players. A successful shot, which came four minutes before the end of the match, ensured the Czechoslovaks a historic victory 1: 0 over invincible Canadians. "Beating the best Canadian professionals on their ice, that's amazing!" the top-scorer says.
The reverse side of the coin, which was processed by the academic sculptor Jan Lukáš, presents a period portrait of Milan Nový supplemented with his jersey number 6. Besides his name there is the following inscription: WORLD CHAMPION 1976, 1977 / MEMBER OF IIHF AND CZECH HOCKEY HALL OF FAME. The State of Samoa provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to coin its own coins, therefore, their obverse sides bear the following necessary attributes – the portrait and the name of the Queen Elizabeth II., the national emblem, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (WST) and the year of the issue 2020.
Do not forget that you can store a hockey coin in a special collector´s etui in the form of a puck.
