Cathedral of St. Elizabeth

The third silver coin of the Czech Mint's four-part miniseries, which pays tribute to the Cathedral in Košice, features a depiction of its patron saint - St. Elizabeth.

The Hungarian princess Elisabeth lived in Thuringia,
in the heart of Germany, with her husband, the lantkrabbe Louis IV. She was a thorn in the side of the local nobility because, despite her noble origins, wealth and influence, she lived simply and godly. At Wartburg Castle she maintained good relations with the servants, whom she treated as friends. When the country was plagued by drought, she opened the granaries wide open. To provide the poor with a livelihood, she hired them to build roads and bridges. She founded hospitals and did not hesitate to put a leper in his own bed... She found support in her beloved Louis, but after he died on the crusade, his ungrateful family drove her away. So she went to a convent and joined the Franciscan Order, where she continued to care for the poor and sick people... When she died in 1231, she was 24 years old. But the legend of her kindness was known far and wide, so it is no wonder that the Pope canonized her just four years later. In the 1340s, colonizers also paid tribute to her, making her the patron saint of Košice, a newly founded city in her native Hungary...

The author of the coin - the medal maker
Lenka Nebeská, DiS. - was inspired by the neo-Gothic statue of St. Elizabeth and the beggar, which decorates the south portal of the Košice Cathedral. The composition of the reverse side is completed by the Slovak inscription SVÄTÁ ALŽBETA. As this is a coin issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, the obverse side bears the necessary elements of this issuer - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR and the year of issue 2022. All this is supplemented with gothic ornaments.

Coins with the motifs of St. Elizabeth's Cathedral can be stored in a
collector's etui that can also be found in the offer of the Czech Mint.
