Cathedral of St. Elizabeth

The second silver coin of the Czech Mint's four-part miniseries, which pays tribute to the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth in Košice, features a depiction of the Northern portal.

According to medieval architectural rules, entrances to churches were never built on the north side because it was considered to be evil. However, the town hall north of
Košice Cathedral was the seat of the venerable mayor, and out of respect for him the cathedral was given the curious Northern portal. The rich relief that surrounds the double doors presents scenes from the Last Judgment. While the virtuous enter the gates of heaven, the wicked go to hell. It is not without interest that the courageous old masters included a bishop and a nun among the damned who fall into hell's throat. The end of the world, announced by the angels, is witnessed by Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the Apostles. A significant part of the relief is also dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia. The Hungarian princess, to whom the cathedral is dedicated, is depicted nursing, washing and feeding the poor. The more modern sculptural decoration of the portal then presents other Hungarian saints and rulers.

On the reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker
Lenka Nebeská, DiS., you will find a detailed depiction of the richly decorated portal. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the Slovak inscription SEVERNÝ PORTÁL. As this is a coin issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, the obverse side bears the necessary attributes of this issuer - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR and the year of issue 2022. All this is supplemented with gothic ornaments.

Coins with motifs of the Košice Cathedral can be stored in a
collector's case which you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
