Armored vehicles

The tenth silver coin of the Czech Mint from the series Armoured Technology commemorates the German Panzerkampfwagen IV tank that served during World War II.

The development of the German armoured PzKpfw IV started in 1934, when a tender was issued for the delivery of a new medium tank. The Krupp design won the competition and the first machine was producted in 1937. While the Panzer III was to fight enemy tanks, the Panzer IV was intended to support attacking infantry and destroy fortified positions. The main armament of its early variants was the 75mm short-barreled gun, which was capable of destroying Renault, Hotchkiss or SOMUA machines during the French campaign of 1940, but the Char B1 bis or Matilda tanks were already giving it trouble. Then, when the Third Reich attacked the Soviet Union and clashed with the advanced T-34 and KV-1 types, there was a sudden need for a machine capable of fighting heavily armoured and better armed opponents. As the development of new tanks was lengthy and the Panzer III did not allow the installation of appropriately powerful armament, the Panzer IV was hastily armed with a long 75mm gun. The modernized machine, which Adolf Hitler had personally demonstrated, proved its worth on all fronts. It became a reliable workhorse of the army and continued to be improved. With nearly 10,000 examples, the Panzer IV was eventually the only German tank produced and used throughout the Second World War.

The reverse side of the commemorative coin, which is the work of the medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek, presents two depictions of a German tank - the three-quarter view is supplemented with a side silhouette. An inscription of the PzKpfw IV and a detail of the tank belt complete the composition. The stripes can also be found on the obverse side of the coin, which is common to the entire tank series. As the licence to issue commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is granted by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2024.

The coin is set in an epic packaging in the form of a catalogue card full of period photographs, interesting facts and tactical and technical data. Individual cards can be stored in a collector's binder, which you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
