Product description

In 2020, we commemorate 150 years since the birth of Adolf Loose - one of the most fighters for simplicity and functionality in architecture. A silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK stamped in quality proof was issued to this occasion.

Although Adolf Loos did not consider himself an architect, he became one of the greatest representatives of European architecture of the 20th century
. He was born into the family of stonemason in Brno in 1870, but he refused to continue following the family tradition. He studied industrial engineering in Liberec and in Vienna, but did not finish any school. He had problems with authorities and established conventions, which was to be reflected in his work in the future. Loos undertook a dream trip to the United States at the end of the 19th century, which fascinated him with its industrial buildings, simplicity of lifestyle and purpose. Shortly after settling in Vienna, he set up his own design office and began to provoke a local conservative society. In architecture and applied art, he rejected anything that prevented the full use of all the functions of the work. In his most important and influential article, he rejected ornaments as an unnecessary relic that only wastes time and money. However, the fact that he did not consider architecture to be art did not mean that it should not meet aesthetic ideals. Loos saw them in the harmony, purposefulness, austere and dignified elegance of modern man, who is relieved of the burden of everything old.

Müller's villa
, which stands in Prague at Ořechovka, was a typical example of Loos's concept. The medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS., who won the CNB art competition, dedicated the obverse side of the coin to this villa. The reverse side then presents the architect's portrait, supplemented with his annual dates.
