Product description

A two-ounce silver coin entitled ‘The Darkest Hour’ reflects on the end of the world.

Thoughts about the end of the world are among humanity’s oldest concepts. They have been with us ever since our ancestors realised that nothing lasts forever. If human life can come to an end, if a mighty empire can fall, why couldn’t the whole of humanity, or even the Earth itself, also cease to exist? Long ago, for example, people believed that destruction would be brought about by a battle between divine beings, but as our knowledge grew, we realised that far less is needed than a supernatural biblical Apocalypse or the Norse Ragnarök. Instead of wrathful gods, today we look to the skies for threats in the form of asteroids, comets or solar flares. However, the causes of the end of the world may be so small that we do not even notice them – it was not so long ago that we learnt the hard way what chaos a microscopic virus can unleash. This time, we defeated it, but it seems that humanity is incorrigible and is heading straight towards its own demise. In fact, we ourselves are the greatest threats – nuclear weapons, climate collapse, artificial intelligence, … It might seem that such bleak visions are bound to instil fear, but the human relationship with the end of the world is far more complex. Catastrophic scenarios frighten us, yet at the same time they strangely attract us. Many people even find solace in them. The idea that we will one day die is hard to grasp, but when the whole world comes to an end in our imaginations, we are not alone in this…

The reverse side of the coin depicts a world in collapse from ancient pyramids to ultra-modern skyscrapers. Who is behind all this destruction? Viruses, ballistic missiles and, above all, aliens! The richly decorated obverse side is then dedicated to the essential attributes of the coin’s issuer, the island of Niue and it bears its coat of arms, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2026. All of this stands out in high relief, embellished with patina.

The mintage of this coin by T&S Coin totals just 500 pieces.
