Product description

The Britannia bullion coin is the pride of The Royal Mint. Its design changes regularly and 2024 is no exception. You can admire the brand new relief on the one troy ounce silver coin in top proof quality.

For two thousand years, the proud Britannia has represented Britain and symbolised strength, resilience and bravery - the values the island nation holds most dear. This allegorical personification, in the form of a graceful goddess armed with Neptune's trident, shield and Corinthian helmet, first appeared on coins around 119 AD. At that time, Britain was a Roman province ruled by the Emperor Hadrian. The figure disappeared after the end of the Roman Empire, but reappeared in the 16th century - during the Elizabethan period - when it came to represent British naval power. In the following centuries, Britannia became a cultural icon, cheering the British war effort from propaganda posters during both world wars and adorning stamps and banknotes. Understandably, it again became a coin theme - starting with Charles II, it appears on the reverse side of the coins of all British monarchs. Charles III did not come close.

The reverse side of the coin, designed by French illustrator Marie-Alice Harel, is dominated by a modern interpretation of Britannie. The crest of her helmet changes seamlessly into a sea wave, referencing the British Isles' age-old connection to the surrounding waters. The obverse side of the coin then belongs to the attributes of the issuer - i.e. the nominal value of 2 POUNDS (GBP), the portrait of King Charles III and the text CHARLES II D G REX F D (Charles III, by the grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith).

Thanks to the fact that its relief changes regularly, the bullion coin is also an attractive addition to numismatic collections.
