Product description
A series of silver coins pays tribute to the beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. The second issue, featuring the movie poster motif, commemorates the film subtitled The Two Towers.
In 2001, the spectacular journey of the Fellowship of the Ring amazed the world. The film had heart, soul and was a huge box office success. With a budget of $93 million, it grossed nearly ten times that, and it was a sure bet that the second installment of the Lord of the Rings book trilogy would be made into a film. The Two Towers arrived in theaters just one year later. After the heroes of the story were split up at the end of the first volume, they went their separate ways, allowing the film to introduce several storylines simultaneously. The intimate psychological narrative story, underlined by masterful acting, was interspersed with breathtaking battles in which thousands of warriors clashed on screen. The ancient poetics of writer J.R.R. Tolkien mingled with the latest trick technology to bring to life the bloodthirsty scurvy attacking Helm's Deep, the prudent enthusiast Stromovus and the pitiful hobbit Gollum. Peter Jackson, once again in the director's chair, confirmed that the success of his previous fantasy film was no fluke. He has risen to the ranks of Hollywood's elite and has begun to prepare for the completion of his life's work…
The unusual rectangular coin takes the form of a movie poster. The vivid colours, achieved by colouring technology, feature the story's favourite characters - Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn, Arwen, Legolas, Gimli, Sam, Éowyn, Gollum and Saruman. The silver relief is then dominated by Sauron's fortress Barad-dûr - or one of the titular two towers. As the issuer of the coin is the island of Niue, its obverse bears its attributes - the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2022 and the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD). The design of the officially licensed coinage is the work of the New Zealand Mint's art collective.
Each coin is placed in a special box to allow its display.
