Femme Fatale

The eighth femme fatale commemorated by the gold coin from the Czech Mint's free cycle is the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

Life was not kind to Frida Kahlo. She beat infantile paralysis, and when it seemed that the only consequence of her severe illness would be a lame leg, the 18-year-old Mexican was seriously injured in a bus accident. Doctors gave her little hope of survival - it was 1925 and the damage to her pelvis, hips, legs, collarbones, ribs and spine was extensive. But the will to live was stronger. Frida underwent thirty-five operations and was bedridden for many months. She had a mirror hung from the ceiling and began to paint her own reflection. Thus was born the world's most famous female painter. As a self-taught artist, she was not formed by schools and academia. She did not hesitate to take liberties and passionately combined a variety of styles in her work - realism, surrealism, symbolism, expressionism, naive painting and Mexican folk art. She painted mainly portraits and self-portraits as she knew herself best of all. A proud woman with thick eyebrows, gaudy dresses and massive jewellery, she was as colourful as her paintings. Indian, Jewish and Spanish heritage mingled in her restless blood. She suffered from pain, struggled with addiction and was unable to have children, yet she was able to enjoy life to the fullest. She was loved by artists and revolutionaries alike, and her romantic escapades were filled with passion and betrayal. She died at just forty-seven, but her personality has become an inexhaustible well of inspiration for all strugglers - women, artists, the disabled, minorities, lovers, …

The reverse side of the commemorative coin from the studio of medal maker Vojtěch Dostál, DiS., is dominated by a portrait of the charismatic female painter inspired by a contemporary photograph. The composition of the reverse is completed by flowers and the inscription FRIDA KAHLO. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the island of Niue, they bear its national emblem on the obverse side, the nominal value of 50 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2023.

The one troy ounce gold coin is issued in a mintage of only 200 pieces.
