Spytihněv I – a Czech duke, descendant of the Přemyslid dynasty – was the eldest son of prince Bořivoj I and princess Ludmila. He and his father Bořivoj I built many strongholds and they also laid the foundations of the Prague Castle. It was at this period that Prague became the centre of the arising Czech state.
The obverse side features the coin’s essentials: the effigy of Queen Elizabeth, the denomination (250 NZD), name of the country and the year of issue. It also copies a scene from the Velislav Chronicle showing Spytihněv I by the Church of Our Lady, the oldest stone building in the Prague Castle complex, where he and his wife were buried. Only the foundations and the tombs of the couple been been preserved where the church once stood. On the reverse side we can see the figure of Spytihněv I with the Přemyslid flaming eagle. The motif is based on wall paintings decorating the rotunda in Znojmo.
