Product description
The year 2022 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dana and Emil Zátopek - the legendary athletic couple. The Czech Mint created a half-ounce gold medal, which is part of a free cycle of the most beautiful unrealised designs entered into the Czech National Bank's competitions.
He turned his head while running, his style was elaborate, his face contorted by exertion, and that is why he was nicknamed Emil Hrozný (the Terrible). However, the endurance runner Emil Zátopek repeatedly pushed the limits of human possibilities. He became a three-time European champion, a holder of four gold and one silver Olympic medal, and a breaker of 61 Czechoslovak and 18 world records. Although he ruled the world of athletics, he valued something else much more: "Victory is a great thing, but friendship is even better." Emil's soulmate was his wife, the phenomenal javelin thrower Dana, who became a double European champion and Olympic gold and silver medallist. Their teamwork was extraordinary - Dana won the javelin throw beyond the 50m mark on the same day that Emil won the 5km race at the Helsinki Olympics. Apart from their sporting talent and enthusiasm, the husband and wife Zátopek were also united by their date of birth. Both were born in the same year and on the same day. They spent fifty-two years side by side…
The art design of the medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS. was used as a template for commemorative medal dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Zátopek. The expert committee of the Czech National Bank awarded it second place for "a very nice representation of the two figures in motion, quality portraits and for connecting both sides of the design by incorporating the letter Z".
The mintage is only 99 pieces. Each medal is also hand-numbered on the edge.
