The coin commemorates 200th anniversary of birth of German music composer Richard Wagner.
Wagner was also conductor, poet, author of theoretical writings on music, opera reformer and representative of Romanticism in music. After having spent most of his adult life in exile the musician came home to live in Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, where he had his own opera house built. The artist also visited Bohemia several times, primarily Prague and Teplice; a trip to the Střekov castle inspired him to compose the opera Tannhäuser.
Wagner created a concept of musical drama and brought new features to operatic composition. In his works he was strongly influenced by Shakespeare. His widely known operas include The Flying Dutchman, Parsifal, Tannhäuser, Tristan and Isolde and many others.
The coin was designed by academic sculptor Vladimír Oppl who placed on the obverse side the Střekov castle mirroring in water and the mandatory features –the coin’s denomination (10 dollars), effigy of Queen Elizabeth, year of issue 2013 and the name Niue Island.
The reverse side features the composer’s portrait, his name in circumscription and years of birth and death.
