Product description
The second gold medal of the Czech Mint weighing two troy ounces pays tribute to Jan Saudek. Its main motif is a photograph entitled Life.
Jan Saudek's work is a controversial and provocative celebration of humanity. It is sensual, animalistic, erotic, even perverse. Its most frequent subject is femininity, but this does not mean that there is no place for masculinity. The masculine artist repeatedly returns to the issue of relationships between men and women, which are full of love and hate, but also to the theme of fatherhood, which is well known to him. The 1966 photograph Life, which inspired the paintings of the same name, presents the artist himself as a father. A being intimate and naked - stripped of the clothes that society has put on him - presses a defenceless child to his chest. The close proximity between the two creatures invites us to reflect on where we have come from and where we are heading. This iconic work, which is fragile and intimate, yet powerful and intense, inspired the second commemorative medal, created in collaboration with Jan Saudek...
The author of the medal is Vojtěch Dostál, DiS., who was personally chosen by Jan Saudek as part of an art competition. The obverse side is an embossed reconstruction of a photograph entitled Life. The reverse side presents Jan Saudek's signature in an unusual reverse proof quality.
The original graphic sheet from Jan Saudek's studio is an integral part of the gold medal, which is issued in an edition of only 100 numbered pieces.
