Patrons
The Czech Mint dedicated the tenth gold miniature coin from the Patrons series to Saint Lucy.
Lucy came from a rich family living in Syracuse, Sicily. She devoted herself to the Christian faith in her childhood, and because she promised to remain a virgin, she persistently refused offers of marriage. Lucia's mother nevertheless promised her daughter to a wealthy aristocrat. What he liked most of all about Lucia were her beautiful eyes, so the girl, wanting to discourage him, gouged them out and sent them to him as a gift. Then a miracle happened that night and Mary, mother of Jesus gave her new eyes - even more beautiful. When the pagan suitor realized that his bride-to-be was a Christian, he turned her in to the Roman authorities. The court ruled that the chaste Lucy would be thrown into a brothel as punishment, but the soldiers couldn't move her with a pair of oxen. In the end, they put a sword through her neck and made her a martyr. Since then, Saint Lucy has helped with eye diseases and has been worshiped by the blind or the poor, to whom she gave away her entire dowry during her lifetime. She has also become the patron saint of glassmakers, glass cutters and seamstresses.
The medal maker David Kružliak dedicated the reverse side of the coin to the blind saint with her eyes gouged out and placed on a tray. She is holding the palm branch that is a symbol of martyrdom. The Czech-English inscription on the reverse side states SV. LUCIE - ST. LUCY. The obverse side then presents a profile and name of the monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2022 and the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), which means the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign licence to mint its own commemorative coins.
The gold coin weighing one half gram is set in a special Slovak-English packaging. It will serve as an affordable gift as well as an original addition to your collection and will become a good luck charm.
