Product description

Another gold mini coin of the Czech Mint set in a replica of a historical postcard with a Slovak motif commemorates Devín Castle.

A rock towers near Bratislava above the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, guarding the crossroads of trade routes between west and east and south and north. The history of this strategic location is extremely rich and contains traces of all kinds of cultures. There is a burial site for prehistoric people, the remains of an oppidum for the Celts and a massive stone structure, which resembles an ancient tomb, as a reminder of the ancient Romans. The Slavs built a fortress on the rock, which experienced the rise and fall of Great Moravia and then became an important stronghold of the Kingdom of Hungary. The small border fortress called Devín became a Gothic castle and then a Renaissance and Baroque palace. Devín was conquered many times, but was always rebuilt and strengthened. Its fate was sealed only by Napoleon's grenadiers, who blew it up at the beginning of the 19th century. Since then, the castle has been a magnificent ruin, as evidenced by a lithograph postcard from the late 19th century, which served as a template for the coin packaging…

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker MgA. Tereza Eisnerová, presents an aerial view of the ruins supplemented with the inscription DEVÍN. As the coin of the Czech Mint is issued with the license of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary elements - the national emblem, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2023.

The issue, which will delight numismatists and philocartists, is an original and affordable collector's piece as well as an attractive regional gift.
