Product description

The new 5-ducat gold coin dedicated to St. Wenceslas, minted by the Czech Mint in 2026, will appeal to collectors, investors, and anyone looking for a truly valuable gift. It commemorates this historical figure in his role as a martyr.

Under the rule of Prince Wenceslas, the Czechs prospered. Instead of expanding the principality, he focused on consolidating it, and he managed to preserve the country’s sovereignty even at the cost of submitting to the German Empire. Wenceslas’s ambitious younger brother Boleslaus could not bear this. Instead of paying tribute to enemies, he wanted to fight for independence, so he decided to betray the prince. First, he invited Wenceslas to a feast at his home in Stará Boleslav. On the way back from morning prayers, he lay in wait for him and struck him in the head with a sword. He was smaller and weaker, so he only inflicted a minor wound on the experienced knight. Moreover, Wenceslas snatched the sword from him and threw it away, because he did not want to shed Boleslav’s blood. But then the traitor’s retainers rushed in and pounced on the defenseless Wenceslas. The wounded prince tried to find refuge in the cathedral, but the doors were locked, and so he was murdered on the threshold… Or was it different? The takeover that followed seemed well-planned, but the attack on Wenceslas itself appeared unprepared. Perhaps it was not a conspiracy, but a misunderstanding. It is possible that Boleslav did not plan to kill his brother, but an argument broke out. The squires were then confused by the sword in Wenceslas’s hand and were merely defending their lord… What is certain is that Boleslav became the Czech ruler for the next forty years and began to build the cult of Wenceslas. Perhaps he was consumed by guilt, perhaps he simply exploited the situation cleverly - for the Czechs had lost a prince, but gained their first saint…

The obverse side of the gold five-ducat coin, designed by medalist Veronika Prokopová, DiS., features Wenceslas as a martyr, whose life is fading away at the temple door. The inscriptions on the obverse side bear SAINT WENCESLAS, MARTYR, 5-DUCAT. The reverse side of the coin features a flaming eagle framed by the year 2026 and the text of the famous chorale – DO NOT LET US OR OUR DESCENDANTS PERISH.

Each five-ducat coin is serialized on the edge and comes with a unique serialized certificate coated with a layer of gold.
