Product description

Gold ducats belong to the main products of the Czech Mint. St. Wenceslas will appear on coins again in 2024, which will delight collectors, patriots and anyone looking for an original and valuable gift.

The first Czech gold coins, called ducats, were minted by King Charles IV. When the Jagiellonians came to the Czech throne, the figure of St. Wenceslas - the patron saint of the Czech lands - appeared in relief for the first time. The gold content of the ducats was carefully controlled and they belonged to the most reliable coins of their time. The weight of each ducat was set at 3.49 g and the purity of the gold used at 986/1000. Various multiples began to appear gradually - from two ducats to one hundred ducats. Moreover, ducats remained legal tender for several centuries. Ducat coins were also minted during the First Republic, when they became a popular gift for various important events. The Czech Mint follows this tradition to issue the new gold ducats which are again dedicated to the personality of the legendary Přemyslid prince.

The obverse side of the gold ducat, which is the work of the medal maker Mgr. Petr Horák, presents St. Wenceslas as a knight - with a helmet and in a ring armour. The text on the obverse side states SV. VÁCLAV – 1-DUKÁT (ST.WENCESLAS-1-DUCAT). The reverse side of the mintage is filled with a flaming eagle clutching the St. Wenceslas´ sword. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the year 2024 and the text of the famous old Czech chorale: SVATÝ VÁCLAVE, VÉVODO ČESKÉ ZEMĚ… NEDEJ ZAHYNOUTI NÁM I BUDOUCÍM (SAINT WENCESLAS, DUKE OF THE CZECH LAND, DO NOT LET US PERISH).
