New seven wonders of the world

The fourth of the new Seven Wonders of the World is the Jordanian rock city of Petra. The legendary monument is commemorated by a gold coin of the Czech Mint weighing one tenth of a troy ounce.

The Nabataeans, whose home was the Arabian Desert, were an ancient nation of herdsmen. Their livelihood was provided by their large herds of camels and sheep, but their real wealth came from robbery expeditions. They mugged trading caravans and hid the looted treasure in a city called Petra. Over time, they realised that working with merchants would be much more profitable for them, and they turned Petra, which was hidden deep in the rocks, into a trading hub - an oasis in the middle of an arid wasteland. They managed to make a place where every drop of water is scarce literally flourish. Exhausted caravans carrying precious goods from India to the Mediterranean couldn't believe their eyes when they came across gardens, vineyards, fountains and even a huge swimming pool in the middle of the wasteland.  How did the Nabataeans manage it? Thanks to an ingenious irrigation system that collected water that fell from the sky during the rainy season and water from a distant mountain spring. The precious liquid - up to 40,000 cubic metres a day - was then distributed through tens of kilometres of ceramic pipes. At its peak, Petra hosted up to thirty thousand people. It enchanted with rock houses, temples, amphitheatres and tombs. But gradually it began to decline as traders found easier and quicker routes. Eventually, Petra was forgotten. It was not rediscovered by the Western world until the 19th century and has since faced unceasing interest, as evidenced by its inclusion in the list of the New Seven Wonders of the World...

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Ludmila Kracíková, DiS.presents the Al-Khazneh Temple. The building, better known as the Treasury, is supplemented with the inscription PETRA. On the obverse side, which is common to the entire cycle, all the new seven wonders of the world appear - the Brazilian statue of Christ the Saviour, the Jordanian rock city of Petra, the Mayan city of Chichén Itzá in Mexico, the Roman Colosseum, the Indian monument of the Taj Mahal, the Inca seat of Machu Picchu in Peru and the Great Wall of China. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign license of the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2024 on the obverse side.

Each coin is sealed in a special packaging.

Note: The packaging is covered with foil to prevent damage during transport.
