New seven wonders of the world

The third of the new Seven Wonders of the World is the Inca site of Machu Picchu. The legendary monument is supplemented with a gold coin of the Czech Mint weighing one tenth of a troy ounce.

We don't know much about the advanced civilisation that expanded across South America between the 13th and 16th centuries AD, but one thing is certain - the Incas were master builders. The breathtaking Peruvian city of Machu Picchu is unquestionable proof of their skill. Located in the inaccessible Andes at 2,430 metres above sea level, it is the perfect blend of architecture and dramatic mountain forest landscape. Temples, altars, houses, staircases, walls - all have been built here from perfectly crafted blocks of granite. All the stones fit together in such a way that not even a sheet of paper can be inserted between them without the use of any binding agent. The Incas didn't know the wheel, but they built structures that could withstand earthquakes. They distributed water and turned rocky hillsides into fertile terraces. In its most famous period, up to a thousand people lived at Machu Picchu, but eventually had to leave their advanced home, perhaps because of plague, famine or war. The Incas tried in vain to curry favour with the gods through bloody rituals. Their empire was eventually destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors, but they never found the city hidden in the mountains. Over the centuries, it was swallowed up by vegetation and forgotten. No record of it survives, so its rediscovery in 1911 was a huge surprise...

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., presents an actual image of the mountain town supplemented with an inscription of MACHU PICCHU. On the obverse side, which is common to the entire cycle, all the new seven wonders of the world appear - the Brazilian statue of Christ the Saviour, the Jordanian rock city of Petra, the Mayan city of Chichén Itzá in Mexico, the Roman Colosseum, the Indian monument of the Taj Mahal, the Inca seat of Machu Picchu in Peru and the Great Wall of China. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign license of the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2024 on the obverse side.

Each coin is sealed in a special packaging.

Note: The packaging is covered with foil to prevent damage during transport.
