New seven wonders of the world

The fifth of the new Seven Wonders of the World is the Brazilian Statue of Christ the Redeemer. The legendary monument is commemorated by a gold coin of the Czech Mint weighing one tenth of a troy ounce.

The idea of raising a Christian monument on the prominent Corcovado hill above the city of Rio de Janeiro was introduced by the priest Pedro Maria Boss in 1859. At the time, it was to be a tribute to Princess Isabella - daughter of Brazil's last emperor, Peter II - but the project was not approved. The new rulers of the country, who overthrew the monarchy and established a republic in 1889, were not in favour of the religious building either. The idea was not resurrected until decades later by representatives of the Archdiocese of Rio. The laying of the cornerstone took place in 1922 - on the 100th anniversary of Brazil's independence from Portugal - although it was unclear what the statue would look like. That same year, a competition was held and the work was undertaken by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, the Brazilian artist Carlos Oswald, the French sculptor Paul Landowski and the Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida. Over the next nine years, under their hands, a 30 metre high Statue of Christ the Redeemer was created, standing on an 8 metre high pedestal atop a peak 710 metres above sea level. The iron-concrete Jesus with open arms, symbolising peace and acceptance of all who come to Rio, has become a place of pilgrimage, a tourist attraction, a symbol of the whole of Brazil and a new wonder of the world.

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., presents the Statue of Christ the Redeemer. The detail of the monument is supplemented with the English inscription CHRIST THE REDEEMER. On the obverse side, which is common to the entire cycle, all the new Seven Wonders of the World appear - the Brazilian Statue of Christ the Redeemer, the Jordanian rock city of Petra, the Mayan city of Chichén Itzá in Mexico, the Roman Colosseum, the Indian monument of the Taj Mahal, the Inca seat of Machu Picchu in Peru and the Great Wall of China. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign license of the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2024 on the obverse side.

Each coin is sealed in a special packaging.

Note: The packaging is covered with foil to prevent damage during transport.
