Traditional ducat series

The traditional Ducat series of the Czech Mint pays tribute to the supernatural protectors of our homeland. The relief of the gold ten-ducat recalls the legend of the Palladium of the Bohemian land.

When Princess Ludmila was baptised, the saint Methodius gave her with a metal image of the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus in her arms. The precious icon was then inherited by Prince Wenceslas, who always had it with him. After Wenceslas' martyrdom, this treasure was saved by Wenceslas' companion, Blessed Podiven. Before he was caught and killed, he managed to hide the image in the ground, where it was found by a ploughman. The icon miraculously returned from his house to the place where he had dug it up, and the Old Boleslav church was built there. Unfortunately, the Palladium of the Bohemian land - the shield of faith and statehood - did not attract only pious pilgrims. It was destroyed by the Hussites, plundered by the Saxons and Swedes, threatened by the Turks, Prussians and Nazis, but it survived all adversities to protect our homeland…

Medal maker Lenka Nebeská, DiS., dedicated the obverse side of the ten-ducat to the Madonna and Child in her arms. The holy couple is surrounded by shining stars. The reverse side, which is common to all four Ducat series coins, presents heraldic animals of the Czech lands - a lion and two eagles.

The gold coinage, the weight of which is ten times the weight of one ducat, is issued in an edition of only 100 pieces. Its specifications are inspired by the first Republican St. Wenceslas ducats.
