Token Hurvínek - 100th anniversary stand

Hurvínek is an incredible 100 years old! To mark the occasion, the legendary puppet appears on a commemorative token from the Czech Mint.

• Spejbl: Hey, it just occurred to me... Do you even know that you're the oldest child in the world?

• Hurvínek: Daddy, do you even know that you're the youngest father in the world? You were six when I was born...

• Spejbl: Well, yes. I was a little hasty. And that's how it turned out with you, you know? Because you're the student with the longest school attendance!

In 1920, Mr. Spejbl was born in Pilsen, carved by Karel Nosek based on a design by puppeteer Josef Skupa. The creators gave the puppet a bald head, a large nose, even larger ears, and bulging eyes. Initially, Spejbl was the theatrical partner of the popular Kašpárek, and his thankless role was that of a caricature of a narrow-minded petit bourgeois. However, the two characters did not fit together very well, and the plays with Spejbl alone were not quite right either. The necessary revival came with Spejbl's smaller and technically more advanced version, which was born in 1926. The new puppet with blond hair and bulging eyes was initially called Spejblátko. He was a big-city braggart, but over time he took on the role of Spejbl's mischievous son and was given the name Hurvínek. The rascal, who plays pranks on his caring father, enriched the plays with a proven intergenerational conflict, and suddenly the stage was set for phenomenal success. A whole century has passed since then...

On the obverse side of the coloured token, which is the work of medallist Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., you will find Hurvínek, cheerfully striding through the century. The composition of the obverse is completed by the inscription HURVÍNEK – 100 YEARS. The reverse side belongs not only to the birthday boy, but also to his father Spejbl, his friend Mánička, and her grandmother Kateřina.
