Product description

The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom commemorates ten heraldic animals of the Royal House of Tudor. The third commemorative coin in the collectible series is dedicated to the yale of Beaufort.

While we can imagine a unicorn, dragon or griffin, few people have any idea what such a mythical yale looks like. Even medieval illustrators had doupts, adapting its form according to whether it was meant to convey dignity and elegance or strength and determination. However, the features of the goat or the antelope are common to all the depictions. Besides the prominent horns, which can be turned in any direction independently, the strange creature has the jaw of a wild boar. Yale has become one of the symbols of Great Britain thanks to Margaret Beaufort, who was a key figure in the War of the Roses and the grandmother of Henry VIII. The Tudor king then sent the yale to his third wife, Jane Seymour, to emphasize her influence and authority.

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of artist David Lawrence, presents a curious yale holding a shield with its hooves. The obverse side of the coin is dedicated to the attributes of the issuer - i.e. the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the text ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF (Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith) and the nominal value of 5 POUNDS (GBP).

The commemorative coin, made of base metal, is placed in a special packaging that tells its story in words and pictures (in English).
