Product description
Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne in 1952. Already 70 years have passed since then, and the island kingdom can celebrate the platinum jubilee of its monarch. To mark the occasion, The Royal Mint has launched a number of themed issues - including this Commonwealth-themed commemorative coin.
In the late 19th century, Queen Victoria created an empire on which the sun never set. As well as Great Britain and Ireland, the British Empire included vast overseas territories in America, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Although this empire ceased to exist as a result of the turbulent events of the 20th century, the ties between the individual states were not broken. The so-called Commonwealth was created on the basis of a common past, but also language and institutions. This Commonwealth of Nations, whose inhabitants make up a third of the world's population, is dedicated to cooperation in the fields of education, development aid, economics and politics under the leadership of the respected Queen Elizabeth II, Victoria's great-granddaughter. Because the position of head of the Commonwealth is not hereditary, the question is whether its nations will show the same deference to the Queen's successor...
Irish artist P. J. Lynch dedicated the reverse of the coin to a series of flags that symbolise the Commonwealth. Among the flags of the selected states, the personal flag of Elizabeth II with the Queen's monogram stands out. The Queen's signature, which appears on the coins for the first time, is an additional motif on the reverse side. The obverse side is then dedicated to the attributes of the issuer - i.e. the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the text ELIZABETH II D G REG F D (Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith), the year 2022 and the nominal value of 5 POUNDS (GBP).
The commemorative coin minted from base metals is stored in a special packaging that shows the meaning of the Commonwealth in words and pictures (in English).
