Product description
Slovak hockey achieved a historic success 20 years ago. A gold commemorative medal commemorates the winning of the World Championship title in Gothenburg.
The story of Slovakia's hockey triumph is like a fairy tale. The Slovaks participated in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, when they were beaten even by outsiders from Austria and Germany. The disappointment was huge and few believed that Slovak hockey would recover from the debacle. However, the same year the World Championships were held in Gothenburg, Sweden, where the Slovaks played great. Despite the absence of Slovakia's biggest stars, the team spirit and desire to win were stronger. In a thrilling championship, the Slovaks rose to the top and faced the Russians in a heart-pounding final. They won 4-3 with powerful cheers from the fans in the Gothenburg hall and achieved the greatest achievement of independent Slovak hockey. For the first time in history, the Slovaks won the title of World Ice Hockey Champions...
On the gold medal, which is the work of Mgr. Art. Martin Sabol, there is not only the winning cup, but also Peter Bondra's winning goal.
Moreover, Slovakia won its very first Olympic hockey medal in Beijing in 2022, therefore, the gold medal is accompanied by a brass medal made by Branislav Ronai, which commemorates this bronze sporting triumph.
The mintage of the gold medal, which was minted by the Slovak Mint Mincovňa Kremnica, is only 100 numbered pieces. The original packaging takes the form of a hockey puck.
