Product description

In every culture around the world, the birth of a child is a reason for celebration, and ours is no exception. The celebrations involve a number of rituals, including the presentation of gifts to the newborn. Such gifts can take many forms, but since ever, the traditional gift has been a coin made of precious metal – such as this silver thaler from the Czech Mint, on which a dedication can be engraved. This talisman in the form of a coin was given to babies in the families of noble aristocrats, wealthy townspeople, and poor villagers. This precious gift became the first investment in the child's future, which the parents kept safe until the child reached adulthood.

The Jáchymov thaler was a silver coin that originated in the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1520. The currency, which was renowned for the exceptional quality of the metal used, spread throughout Europe and its success inspired the minting of a number of imitations. The Czech thaler thus became, for example, the Dutch daler, which was used as currency in the American colonies. Another corruption of the Czech word gave rise to the famous dollar. Throughout history, thalers were used primarily for commercial purposes, but they also played a representative role. Due to their beauty and, above all, their value, they became a popular gift for babies, so that they would never suffer hardship in life. After World War II, the coin in the cradle was almost forgotten, but the Czech Mint decided to revive this tradition by minting its own silver thalers intended specifically for the occasion of a child's birth. The beauty and value of silver remained, enriched with the incalculable personal value of an engraved dedication.

The 2026 silver thaler was inspired by a legend that tells the story of where newborn babies come from. Medal maker Veronika Prokopová, DiS., dedicated the obverse side to a stork carrying a bundle with a baby in its beak. The reverse side is reserved for engraving text, which can take the form of a personal message, name, date of birth, etc. – there are no limits to your imagination. The only limitation is the length of the text.

Do not miss other variants of the coin for the birth of a child – in our offer for 2026, you will find two different precious metals and variants without an engraved dedication.
