Product description
The silver coin with a nominal value of 10 EUR was minted in quality standard to the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Dubček.
Alexander Dubček was one of the most famous Slovak politicians in Czechoslovak history. He became famous as a fighter against the totalitarian regime and became a symbol of freedom, democracy and social solidarity. He belongs to the key figures of 1968, the year of political, social and economic change. However, efforts to democratize Czechoslovakia were thwarted by the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops. Alexander Dubček was immediately removed from top political circles and forced to give up public life. Although he lived under the constant supervision of the State Security for the next two decades, he did not give up his ideals. He sent protest letters to state authorities and maintained contacts with foreign institutions and human rights activists. He became a key figure in the democratic changes that led to the fall of the communist regime in 1989.
The euro coin is a combination of artistic designs processed by two medal makers. Štefan Novotný's obverse side presents a symbol of freedom - a dove trying to catch a flying linden leaf supplemented with the Slovak national emblem. Reverse side processed by Mgr. art. Martin Sabol bears a faithful portrait of Alexander Dubček, supplemented with his name, signature and life years 1921–1992.
The coin was minted by the Mincovňa Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
