Product description

The Slovak silver euro coin was minted in proof quality on the occasion of the 950th anniversary of the foundation of the monastery in Hronský Beňadik.

In the valley of the Hron River, in the so-called Slovak Gate, there is an exceptional monastery. This unique set of sacral buildings in Hronský Beňadik is the oldest and most important Benedictine monument in Slovakia. It was founded in 1075 accompanied by King Gejza I, who granted it numerous rights and privileges - for example, the collection of salt and timber tolls. In addition, an old trade route connected Nitra with the mining areas that later became royal towns. As a result, the abbey became one of the richest and most magnificent religious institutions in all of Hungary. The spiritual seat was also a centre of medieval culture and learning. Very little of the original Romanesque complex, dominated by the three-nave basilica, has survived. The charming Gothic appearance of the monastery dates from the mid-14th century. From the 16th century, when the Turkish threat appeared on the horizon, the complex was fortified until it became a Renaissance fortress with cannon bastions and massive walls. Although the monastery was seriously damaged not only by the Turks but also by fire in the 19th century, it has survived to this day. Several times a year, the faithful make pilgrimages here seeking peace and healing. These blessings are mediated by the relic of the blood of Christ, which was given to the monastery by King Matthias Corvinus.

The reverse side of the coin bears an overall view of the unique grounds of the monastery in Hronský Beňadik. The scene is complemented by the figure of St. Benedict, the patron saint of the abbey. The text on the reverse states: HRONSKÝ BEŇADIK, OPÁTSTVO SV. BENEDIKTA, 1075. The obverse side presents the interior of the sacral building, dominated by the historical crucifix. The composition of the obverse side is completed by the inscription SLOVAKIA, the state emblem, the noninal value of 10 EURO and the year of issue 2025. All this is the work of the medal maker Tomáš Lamač, DiS.

The coin was minted by the Mincovňa Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
