XXX Summer Olympic Games will take place in 2012 in London. The opening ceremony will be held on 27 July 2012 and the closing ceremony on 12 August 2012. The participants will compete for medals in 26 sports broken down to 39 disciplines. London is the first town where the Olympic Games will have been held three times in modern history. The previous two Olympic Games were organized here in 1908 and 1948.
The opening ceremony – designed and managed by Oscar award winning film director Danny Boyle – will be presented to 80 thousand spectators at the Olympic stadium under the name Magical Islands. The XXX Summer Olympic Games will be open by the royal couple as well as the Paralympic Games starting in London on 29 August.
Elizabeth II as Head of the Commonwealth of Nations opened the Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada, in 1976, while her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, opened on her behalf the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, in 1956. The Queen’s father, King George VI. proclaimed open the Olympic Games in London in 1948.
The obverse side features a view of the Westminster Palace better known as the Houses of Parliament, i.e. the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The palace is situated on the northern bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster in the neighbourghood of other government departments and ministries on Whitehall. The motif is accompanied by text: “Olympijské hry London 2012“ (London 2012 Olympic Games).
The reverse side of the medal is covered with the Czech flag complemented with words “Český olympijský výbor“ (Czech Olympic Committee) and the Czech lion.
