Statutory towns

The sixteenth silver medal of the Czech Mint weighing one kilogram, issued as part of the cycle dedicated to our statutory cities, represents Teplice.

The second oldest Czech spa was one of the most fashionable seasonal destinations in Europe in the past.
It was nicknamed Little Paris thanks to its exquisite culture and baroque architecture. Tsar Peter the Great of Russia visited Teplice in 1712 and he was so impressed by the spa that he ordered a search for healing springs upon his return to Russia. Two giants of world art - Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Wolfgang Goethe - met in the Teplice Castle Garden one hundred years later in 1812. A year later, Teplice hosted Tsar Alexander I of Russia, King Frederick William III of Prussia and Emperor Francis I of Austria, who agreed on a joint action against the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte. Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, known as Sissi, tried the beneficial effects of the Teplice spa, which heals and strengthens the musculoskeletal system in 1854. The magical atmosphere of the old days remains in the streets, squares and gardens of Teplice to this day...

The medal maker
Štěpánka Doležalová placed the Kolostůj´s Fountain on the obverse side of the medal. This symbol of Teplice, which was created in 1862, recalls the legend of Václav Hájek from Libočany about finding healing springs. An elaborated aerial view of the city centre completes the composition of the obverse side. The reverse side of the medal bears a map of the Czech Republic together with the statutory towns.

It is not only the weight of the one-kilogram mintage that is impressive, but also its schedule of issuance - only
24 numbered pieces will be produced and placed in a luxurious wooden case.
