The giants of Czech history appear in the relief of the Czech Mint's kilogram silver coins. John Amos Comenius left for eternity 350 years ago, and joined them in 2020.

The thinker and writer John Amos Comenius went down in history as a "teacher of nations." His progressive views on education and upbringing, which influence pedagogy to this day, have succeeded beyond the borders of the Czech Kingdom. During his pilgrimage, he visited Poland, England, Sweden, Hungary and the Netherlands. His name was a household name in Europe and opened the door to the highest circles. However, Comenius longed to return to his homeland, which he loved above all and which he had to leave due to religious intolerance. The Czech lands experienced an extensive wave of violent re-Catholicization after the Battle of White Mountain. Comenius - as the last bishop of the Protestant Unity of Brethren - refused to convert and was forced to seek peace in exile. A man who was devoted to knowledge and handing it down to future generations then stirred up the European conscience and dedicated his life to the struggle for religious rights and national freedom. Unfortunately, he never returned home…

The academic sculptor Majka Wichnerová became the author of the majestic coin. She dedicated the reverse side to a scholar who is working on one of her writings. The portrait is supplemented with a multi-line inscription of 1592–1670, JAN AMOS KOMENSKÝ, ORIGINE MORAVUS - NATIONE BOHEMUS (this Comenius Latin quote can be translated as follows: the origin of the Moravians - the nation of Bohemia). The obverse side then presents a list of Comenius' most famous works - DIDACTICA, ORBIS PICTUS, LABYRINTH OF THE WORLD AND PARADISE OF THE HEART, OPERA OMNIA, SCHOLA LUDUS. Another piece of the puzzle is a fragment of an illustration from the book The World in Pictures, which is surrounded by Comenius' pedagogical credo Omnia sponte fluant, absit violentia rebus (Let everything flow freely and without violence). As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with license by a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, the obverse side still bears its necessary elements - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 80 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2020.

The coin is stored in a luxurious wooden etui and i tis supplemented with a special numbered certificate of authenticity.
