Stories of Our History
The eighth silver medal from the Czech Mint's Stories of Our History cycle reflects Karel Čapek's futuristic vision, which is a warning against the pitfalls of technology. However, it is also a story about the origin of the most famous Czech word in the world, invented by Josef Čapek.
Exactly 100 years have passed since the premiere of the anti-utopian play R.U.R. The title of the work is an abbreviation of the fictitious company "Rossum's Universal Robots", while "robots" are artificial workers that they produce. Where did this neologism, which has spread to all the world's languages and which is now an integral part of ordinary speech, come from? It is based on the historical word robot, which means serf work, and the playwright Karel Čapek himself will answer the rest: “The word was not invented by the author of the play R.U.R., but he brought it to life. It was like this: the idea of the game occured to the author at one moment. He ran to his brother Joseph, a painter who was standing by the stepladder, painting on canvas that rustled. / "You, Josef," the author began, "I would have an idea of the game." The author told him as briefly as he could. / "Write it down," the painter said, without taking the brush from his mouth and continued painting the canvas. It was insultingly indifferent. / "But I don't know," said the author, "how should I call the artificial workers. I'd call them Labor. " Call them robots, "the painter muttered with a brush in his mouth and continued to paint. In this way the word robot was born; and thus attributed to its true originator. "
The medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek became the author of the commemorative medal. The obverse side gives an industrial impression - the relief presents a stark factory and hundreds of anonymous dots that evoke the robots that the factory supplies into the world. On the obverse side there are the texts ROSSUM’S UNIVERSAL ROBOTS - RUR - KAREL ČAPEK. The reverse side is dominated by a depiction of a robot - in fact, it is a caricature of Karel Čapek, whom Josef Čapek styled as an artificial worker. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with a transcription of JOSEF ČAPEK – WORD ROBOT.
An integral part of the medal is built by a special certificate of origin which tells its story.
