Stories of Our History

The history of Masaryk University is a story of czech patriotism, the desire for education and the sacrifices our ancestors laid upon the altar of knowledge. The Czech Mint issued the fourth commemorative medal made of pure silver from the cycle "Stories of Our History" on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding.

The gates of the University in Brno were opened shortly after the Foundation of Czechoslovakia, but it was not a spontaneous idea of revolutionary time. Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, professor of Charles University and the first Czechoslovak president, had emphasized the need for a competition in scientific life since the 1880s and pointed out that the only Czech university needed to compete for its development. The capital Brno was the seat of the new university to provide the best conditions for development. German inhabitants, however, were afraid that the Czech university would weaken their dominant political position. National conflicts culminated in street clashes with tragic consequences and new hopes lit up with the collapse of the old monarchy. The university with four faculties quickly gained reputation but the time was cruel. Especially when the Nazis murdered a number of professors and students. The situation was not much better after the Second World War  when Communists seized power. The university was renamed to Jan Evangelista Purkyne University and this was only the beginning of political machinations and extensive persecutions. Fortunately, there was a freedom after 1989, and the University of Brno could finally return to its original mission. Its success is proved by its long-standing position in the rankings of the world's best universities.

Expert medal maker MgA. Martin Dasek dedicated the obverse side of the medal to T.G. Masaryk and the first rector Karel Englis, who contributed to establish the university. The composition of the obverse side is complemented by the foundation date of the university on 28 January 1919. The reverse side presents a balanced composition consisting of the names of the university and its current nine faculties complemented by the silhouette of the Moravian metropolis.

Each medal is accompanied by a special certificate of authenticity that tells its story.
