Product description
Gold coins of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 10,000 CZK are always dedicated to the most important national anniversaries. This is proven by the fact that only one is being issued in the current five-year issue period 2021-2025. In the CNB art competition, the theme of which was the 1100th anniversary of the martyrdom of St Ludmila, the artwork of the Czech medal design scene competed and it is a pity that there could only be one winning design. Therefore, the Czech Mint chose a motif from among the most beautiful unrealised gold coin designs, which we issued in the form of a silver commemorative medal.
Princess Ludmila was the daughter of a pagan grandee, but alongside her husband - the Přemyslid prince Bořivoj I - she accepted baptism and brought the new faith to Bohemia. A mild and just woman, she became especially famous for her kindness and generosity - to the poor, the infirm, widows and orphans. These and other Christian ideals she passed on to her grandson Václav. His mother Drahomíra, however, was not pleased with Ludmila's influence on the future monarch, and so she had her mother-in-law strangled. However, this ensured her immortality. Václav did not forget the grandmother who raised him and began to build her cult. It wasn't long before Ludmila was declared a saint. Saint Ludmila and Saint Wenceslas then became the patron saints of the Czech lands.
Medal maker Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., dedicated the obverse side of the medal to the figure of Saint Ludmila with a halo. In one hand she holds a veil, which according to legend was used to strangle her, and in the other a palm leaf, which is a Christian symbol of martyrdom and victory. The reverse side presents the inscription ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA (CZECH REPUBLIC) and a stained-glass rosette in which three heraldic animals are set - a Czech lion, a Moravian eagle and a Silesian eagle.
The silver medal will become an addition to the collection and a commemoration of a significant anniversary.
