Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows

The fourth silver medal of the Czech Mint from the Slovak series, which invites to contemplate the events that marked the Immaculate Heart of Mary of the Seven Sorrows, commemorates the Mary's meeting Jesus on the Via Dolorosa.

After Jesus understood his mission, he began to grow increasingly distant from his parents. Both Mary and Joseph were sad, but understood that as the Son of God, he must give priority to his heavenly Father and to a new family made up of faithful followers. Although Mary stepped aside, she by no means forgot or stopped loving. She knew well that Jesus healed the lame, taught in the synagogues, and cast out demons, and then when his final hour came, she wanted to be near him again - more than at any other time in their life together. After all, what mother wouldn't want to bear her child's pain if she could? She had seen him somewhere on the path where the bleeding Saviour had walked with the cross on his back. Their gazes met - they understood each other without words and gave each other strength. The torturers whipped and brutally scourged Jesus. A crowd watched the cruel spectacle, but only Mary, because of her faith, understood what was really happening. The end of Christ's earthly mission was near. He was about to redeem the whole world. Mary was filled with eagerness, but also with dread. Despite her unwavering faith in God's plan, she remained a mother who watched her son's agony. Although she had been preparing for this moment for thirty-three years, she experienced a new kind of pain - she understood what it meant to be truly helpless...

On the obverse side of the commemorative medal, which is the work of the medal maker David Kružliak, a scene from the Stations of the Cross is immortalised. Mary is forced to witness Jesus' suffering. The reverse side, which is common to the whole cycle, is dominated by the bust of the Virgin Mary. Her seven sorrows are expressed through a heart pierced by seven swords.

An integral part of the medal is a brochure which presents, in words and images, the life chapter of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.
