Product description
The collection from the Czech Mint called National Heroes, returns to the time of the Second World War, when the fate of the Czech nation seemed uncertain. The paratroopers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, to whom belong the silver medal, were sacrificed at that time for the greater good.
The two men had a strong friendship and a desire to liberate their country which was divided and controlled by the Nazis. They were willing to sacrifice their lives and entered history as the men who ended the horror-reign of Reinhard Heydrich. However, everything could have been different. At the beginning of the war, they participated in heavy retreat battles in France, but they kept calm and rescued themselves and their fellow fighters. After they arrived in the UK, they applied for positions in the Air Forces as board-shooters, but they were refused, so they enrolled in special operations. When deciding who was to take part in the Anthropoid operation, whose aim was to remove the imperial protector, Jozef Gabčík and Karel Svoboda were chosen. It seemed that the paths of indivisible friends were split, but after Svoboda's wounding in a jump, Kubiš became his successor. Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš stood side by side on May 27, 1942 during an attack on Reinhard Heydrich. On June 18, 1942, during their last fight in the church of St. Cyril and Methodius, they died rather than being captured by the enemy.
The obverse side of the medal is dominated by a double-portrait of the heroic duo. The broken construction above evokes the hook cross, the polished surface beneath symbolizes the light and represents the pedestal bearing the names GABČÍK and KUBIŠ and the date of the attack. "The reverse side is a composition that resembles a parachute and a target. The parachute depicts the entrance of the ANTHROPOID OPERATORS on the Czech territory, where their goal was to attack HEYDRICH. Partial insertion of the name Heydrich under the lower edge of the medal symbolically expresses removal of the protector," explains academic sculpture Jiří Dostál, author of the medal.
An integral part of the issue is the epic packaging in the form of a book with a wrapper. Moreover, it contains a thematic essay by historian PhDr. Petr Koura, Ph.D., an expert, who cooperates with the Czech Mint not only in relation to National Heroes, but also to Czechoslovak presidents.
