Product description

Few historical structures enjoy such popularity as look-out towers. Observation towers rightfully rank among the most visited tourist destinations. They represent a specific part of national history and offer a view of gorgeous sceneries across the country. That’s why Czech Mint has decided for a follow-up to the previous successful edition Castles and Chateaus with a new series named Look-out Towers issued in gold one-ounce, gold quarter-ounce and silver one-ounce variants.

A silver medal Look-out tower Štěpánka is the first of 12 issues of its kind to be minted in the next four years - every year, collectors will have a chance to acquire three of them. Czech Mint approached outstanding artists to design the medals – Jan Hásek, Luboš Charvát and Josef Oplištil. The design of the Look-out tower Štěpánka in its sterling silver splendour was created by Mgr. A. Jan Hásek, showing his characteristic style. The silver investment medal Look-out tower Štěpánka will enrich your collection with another valuable piece and, at the same time, will make for a secure and smart investment of your money due to the low prices of silver and great potential of this metal.

The Look-out tower Štěpánka is perched on the Hvězda hill amidst the Příšovice range. It boasts the title of the oldest look-out tower in the Jizera Mountains. This stone Neo-Gothic structure is named after Archduke Štěpán, who stayed in the region to oversee the construction of the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) road. Construction of the Štěpánka tower began in 1847, but soon it was halted and it had not been completed until 1892 when an octagonal tower made of brick and sandstone was added to the structure. The ruins of a stone war cross are reminiscent of a later period of our history; it reportedly symbolizes a place for the local Nazis during World War II. From the height of 24 metres, Štěpánka offers a breath-taking view of the western part of Giant Mountains, the Desná and Kamenice valley, picturesque chalets scattered among the hills, and the Souš dam and Jizera mountain in the background.

A detailed relief of the Štěpánka tower, surrounded by trees, dominates the obverse side of the medal. It also gives its altitude at respectable 958 m above sea level and the year of completion, 1892. The reverse side depicts the Hvězda hill and Kořenov village, which straddles two mountain ranges - the Giant Mountains and the Jizera Mountains. The silver investment medal Look-out tower Štěpánka is issued in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces. It is not just another sensible investment, it is also a matter of the heart.
