Product description

The second silver medal in a three-part mini-series from the Czech Mint, which uses illustrations by Josef Lada to depict the adventures of the good soldier Švejk, commemorates the disaster involving the Stables Pinscher.

"I am very fond of dogs," said the lieutenant, "some of my friends who are at the front have dogs with them and they wrote to me that the war is going very well for them in the company of such a faithful and devoted animal. So you know all kinds of dogs well, and I hope that if I had a dog, you would take good care of it. What kind do you think is best? I mean a dog as a companion. I once had a Stables pinscher, but I don't know..." "In my opinion, Lieutenant, a Stables pinscher is a very nice dog. Not everyone likes it, because it has bristles and such a hard beard on its muzzle that it looks like a released convict. It's so ugly that it's beautiful, and yet it's smart. A stupid St. Bernard can't hold a candle to it. It's even smarter than a fox terrier. I knew one..." First Lieutenant Lukáš looked at his watch and interrupted Švejk: "It's late, I have to go to bed. I'm on duty again tomorrow, so you can spend the whole day looking for a stable pinscher."

When Lieutenant Lukáš instructed his orderly to find him a dog, he had no idea that he was getting himself into trouble. Švejk, who was an unscrupulous dog dealer in civilian life, had a purebred stable pinscher stolen. When the lieutenant proudly walked around Prague with Max, he was stopped by an enraged colonel. Max was in fact his lost Fox. Although the lieutenant was innocent, he was sent to the front as punishment. Švejk also had to leave the comfort of his home...

The commemorative medal, designed by medalist Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., is a faithful relief reconstruction of Josef Lada's book illustrations. The obverse side shows Švejk, First Lieutenant Lukáš, and the stable pincher that the bellboy brought to the officer's apartment. The reverse side commemorates the consequences of Švejk's actions – it depicts an enraged Colonel Krause von Zillergut shouting at First Lieutenant Lukáš in the street because of the stolen dog.

Don't forget that the first silver medal came with a special collector's album where you can store the complete collection of three medals.
