The Milky Way

The tenth silver coin from the Milky Way collector's series is dedicated to a star monster named Eta Carinae.

It has been believed that Eta Carinae in the constellation of the Ship's Keel is a single star - one of the most massive in the known universe. In reality, however, there are at least two stars swirling around each other in a frantic dance. The cluster, with a total mass of 150 Suns and a luminous output of five million Suns and located 7,500 light years from Earth, has already exploded violently once, but it survived and is expected to explode again as a supernova or hypernova...

The reverse side of the coin was dedicated by medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS., to a dynamic depiction of a star system - more precisely, the Homunculus Nebula, which was formed during the 19th century explosion of Eta Carinae. The vivid colors were achieved using coloring technology. No photographs or computer graphics were used as a model - the author of the coin created an original watercolour painting. Stylized space objects - planets and stars - can be seen in the embossed relief, and the composition is closed with the inscription ETA CARINAE. The obverse side of the coin humorously presents crop circles and a flying saucer that illuminates the national emblem of Niue. This, together with the year of issue 2024 and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), is a necessary attribute of the foreign issuer of the coin - a Pacific island that provides the Czech Mint with a licence to mint its own commemorative coins.

You can save the Star Coin in a collector's album full of interesting facts about our home galaxy and the conquerors of space.
